Saddle Fit.. Check

Saddle Fit.. Check

Okay, so we are talking about saddle pads here.. but it still remains, fit.. check? How often do you look at your saddle pad and second guess the fit? We do it pretty much every time we ride. So here are our top tips for making sure your saddle pad fits and keeps your horse as safe and comfy as possible.

  1. This may be the most obvious, but your saddle pad needs to be large enough to cover the saddle area as it helps to prevent unnecessary tension on your horse.
  2. The type of saddle pad you choose is also important. You don't need to splash out and spend a fortune, but picking a good quality, 100% cotton saddle pad can make a big difference! Avoid synthetic materials where you can as they don't allow for breathability.
  3. All horses are different, some have higher withers, some have those super comfy armchair backs (you know the ones we mean), so this can impact the style you buy. There are lots of high withered saddle pads out there to support the shape of your horses withers and the saddle.
  4. Along with choosing the right style, the correct depth is a factor you shouldn't forget. Though it isn't always necessary to buy thick saddle pads, they can sometimes help. We go by the rule that there should be enough cushion filler inside to absorb the harsh movements of the rider whilst maintaining the comfort for your horse. For more information on what is right for your horse, make sure to talk to your saddle fitter and they can give the best recommendation for you and your horse.
  5. Spacing between the horses wither and the top of the pad is important. There should be enough space between the wither and top of the pad to fit the fingers of one of your hands underneath.
